Microscopy

At Frontier Protection Worldwide, our Optical Microscopy Laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments to facilitate detailed material investigations.

Optical Microscopy Laboratory:

Our capabilities include:

  • Low Power Stereo Microscope:

    • Suitable for initial investigations and non-flat samples.

  • Compound Microscopes:

    • Offering higher magnifications (up to 1000x) and improved resolution.

    • Standard fitted digital cameras for image capture.

    • Image analysis and measurement software available.

Applications of Optical Microscopy:

  • Initial investigations and rough or non-flat sample analysis.

  • Complementary technique to SEM for determining coating thicknesses, corrosion profiles, and grain structure.

  • Provides color dimensions for enhanced diagnostic capabilities.

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM):

The SEM at FPW allows for detailed imaging at higher magnifications (20x to 50,000x) with exceptional depth of field, surpassing optical instruments in resolution.

SEM Applications Include:

  • Detailed microstructural examination of various materials.

  • Quick and simple sample preparation.

  • Qualitative assessment of fracture surface topography, 3D particulate morphology, and surface finish.

Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS):

  • Qualitative elemental composition determination.

  • EDS spectra collection from large sample areas or specific features.

  • Identification of elemental composition of inclusions, foreign bodies, and contaminants.

  • Elemental mapping to identify concentration areas within a sample.

Combined Analytical Techniques:

  • Facilities and expertise for routine and non-routine material characterization and analysis.

  • Serving scientific research, materials engineering, product development, and troubleshooting/quality problems for various industries.

Common Applications:

  • Surface finish optimization and performance analysis.

  • Paints/Coating failures investigation.

  • Identification of foreign objects/debris.

  • Particle shape and size analysis.

  • Failure analysis for components.

At Frontier, our microscopy and analytical services offer a comprehensive approach, combining different techniques to provide valuable insights into materials for a wide range of applications and industries.
